Tobacco
According to the World Health Organisation more than 8 million people die an early death each year due to smoking related diseases, including 1.3 million non-smokers exposed to second hand smoke. Cancer, stroke and heart disease are the major tobacco related causes of death, creating a significant cost to health systems, as well as the environment. In Australia 8.3% of people aged 14 and over smoked daily in 2022-2023, down from 24% in 1991. Meanwhile the use of e-cigarettes is on the rise with 7% of people using "vapes" in 2022-23, although among young people aged 18-24 it was 21%.
Most funds on ESGcheck exclude tobacco - either fully or partially. Most funds exclude tobacco growing, and cigarette production, while some permit limited investment in related sectors and service industries such as distribution or packaging.
